I actually enjoyed this one more than a lot of people did. I might have even enjoyed it more than Tom Jones, but I haven't seen that movie in years.
Fanny Hill is a charming young lady who is innocent in every way. She gets plucked from the streets by a madam at a high class brothel having no clue that she is being led to a brothel.
The rest of the movie is hi-jinks and romance aplenty. It's incredibly silly in that mids sex farce way. You can kind of tell that Russ Meyer was pulling against his producer.
Strangely enough, Russ wanted to make a serious film while his producer and co-director wanted pratfalls. Very far away from the Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, published in by John Cleland, written in prison.
It is considered to be the first English prose pornography novel, and one of the most banned books in history. In this case Meyer and Zugsmith are so far from the original material, making feel like Benny Hill more than erotica.
Fanny Hill even remains a virgin until she gets married in this film!! How is it that a film based on a book that was written almost years prio, is so must more tame, and completely unerotic!?
Just read the novel, you will be shocked and amazed at what Cleland "got away with" in the highly charged and very erotic novel. The film is not without its' charm though, Miriam Hopkins from Trouble in Paradise , Ernst Lubitsch is great as Madame Brown, but overall very disappointing.
Russ Meyer was at odds with his producer, Albert Zugsmith, who wanted to direct this film with more comedy while Meyer wanted to make the picture sexier Miriam Hopkins is the saving grace of the picture, adding class to some poorly executed slapstick with a few wonderfully hilarious exceptions.

Normally, if something is this bad, I give up after about 15 minutes, but when I dedicate myself to an Auteur, as I have with Russ Meyer, I will pretty much watch everything good and bad, because you can learn from the bad stuff too.
What I learned here was that Russ should have never taken this on in the first place. His flat, documentary style does not suit the period story unless he is taking boudoir shots of the various girls.
This is clearly not his movie, though the asinine slapstick would be something that he would incorporate more in his later films.
Fortunately, Russ would bounce right back with the incredible run of Mudhoney, MotorPsycho and Faster Pussycat, so all would be well.

It's just kinda boring. After all, I was definitely pulled into the euphemism comedy, even if it is basically the film's only joke. We have rhyming market sellers, slops thrown on people in the streets, and seeming gallons of busty prostitutes dangling giggling out of windows.
Not based on reality--not one as pleasant as presented, of course--but an aesthetic which I think is perfect for the sort of 'bawdiness' that this movie sets out to achieve.
It's the loyalty not only to the appearance of the London of Cleland's time and description, but it's also the loyalty to the tone of Cleland's work, so particularly rooted in the 18th Century, that helps this movie work so well for me.

Fanny Hill is a funny little manners comedy directed by the era's foremost sex-comedy expert: Russ Meyer. Tame by the director's own standards, the movie follows a down on her luck orphan who goes to an employment agency and ends up getting taken in by the madam of a house of ill-repute.
For , this movie is very "PG" in both content and story - a far cry from the boundary-pushing work Meyer would create less than a decade later. Nonetheless, the seeds of those later works are clearly present in his solid compositions learned as Patton's cameraman during WWII and wickedly funny wordplay which one can only speculate where some of that came from.
Overall, this is a good flick, and the restoration done by the good folks at Vinegar Syndrome make it easy to watch.
Nearly unwatchable, though the male cast was actually quite interesting. Alexander D'Arcy is an unusual actor who is apparently known as being one of Hollywood's go-to 'oily' types.
It seems as if Forman might have borrowed a number of things from this movie. Not a total waste of time, but you can see why RM disowned it and not just the total lack of sex or nudity.
The title character is introduced via a fish-landing-in-bosom gag that might anticipate Erica Gavin's infamous dance in Vixen.
