Well acted and intense, if you have qualms about having to read subtitles, do yourself a favor and work through it and I promise you that a whole new world s of movies will then be available.
There are so many great movies in foreign languages. Try it and never watch a "dubbed movie, the voices never match the character and they are more distracting than subtitles, good luck and enjoy.
This movie had me grimacing at various points. It is a graphic depiction of life in the Rio favelas. If you can handle some very violent scenes, it is an excellent movie and well worth watching, particularly if you are interested in the Rio favelas.
Very intense movie. This movie left a dark mark on that part of the city. I liked the video immensely. It was very good quality to view, and the price of the video was good.
There is violence associated with gaining and maintaining that gang life style so be forewarned; this movie has a lot of violence. It is however, possibly a necessary evil to show the violence in an effort to give context to life in very impoverished communities.
The movie sheds a little light on the motives for people being involved in drug dealing and their inabilities to get out of that lifestyle as well.

How so- in essence: we are all just trying to survive in our present environments. Special features are in depth -as good as movie.
Btw-It is a subtitled movie, so unless you speak Portuguese. Further note they did nice job on size and color of subtitles- allowing you to take in what's happening on the screen.
This is definitely in my top 5 favorite movies. If you haven't seen it, you should.

You won't be disappointed! In the 50s and 60s outside Rio de Janeiro the Brazilian government isolated the poor by building a huge ghetto a distance from Rio de Janeiro.
The ghetto turns into a sizeable city that continues to grow as more people are bussed into the poverty of the area.
The film pushes a message of where there is poverty there are also dreams of something better. The two common means to achieve these dreams are either hard work or escape of the cruel reality through drugs.
The later choice is the common alternative as it is easier to obtain and offers a quick fix to the problem, since hard work that pays enough to escape the ghetto is difficult to find.
However, these robberies seems futile as the real money lays with those who control the drugs. City of God is a strong and disturbing film as it depicts young children being victims of the violence or as the actual assailants as the gangs demands the loyalty.
In addition, the films message is enhanced by terrific cinematography and a well written story, which is based on true events and individuals.
City of God offers a brilliant cinematic experience that will not escape the mind of the audience as it pulls the audience through a painful story that continues to take place in the ghetto outside Rio de Janeiro where one person dies every 30 minutes from violence.

The obvious theme of this film is about gang violence and drugs in an impoverished Brazil. The lead villain is a brute and a particularly nasty piece of work.
Few will miss the irony of the finale. PLEASE please please please don't let the fact that this film is subtitled for English put you off watching it as it did for my dad!
I'm studying this film for my A2 film class at college, but aside from that it is an incredible film. It is thrilling, fast-paced and exiting.
One of the directors of this film has experience in music videos, and the film has a similar feel to it with vibrant colour, quick cuts and a never faltering narrative.
Highly recommend this! If you like your 'documentary' type films highly stylized with very little emotional depth then this is for you. Lots of death, rape and violence with the only result being more and more machismo.

Which I hadn't realised till afterwards which honestly, makes the entirety of this production seems unbelievable. As much as Danny Boyle demonstrated a wisdom in India, Fernando Meirelles has shaken up something gob smacking original and authentic that will entertain, shock, make you laugh and cry and to tell a story of such violence and drama, of such childhood troubles and such forces corruption, blows the mind.
The story opens in the present with a well executed quick cutting chicken chase that has the central character in the middle of the street and the Brazilian gang on one side and the police on the other, a cinematic piece of art that sets the tone for the style of the director and the execution for the start of a brutal yet enjoyable narrative.
The plot shifts back in time and walks us through the formation of the notorious gang leaders of the slums and how childhood ignorance and neglect can form one of the greatest criminals ever.
