One, just because it's a cartoon does not mean it's supposed to be kid or family friendly. This is I thought we'd left that idea in the dirt 20 years ago, but apparently some people haven't gotten the memo.
Two, it's a movie based on a mature rated horror action game. It's violent, it's bloody, people curse, that's the genre. If you missed the memo in point one, point two is going to make you highly upset.
Three, the characters are doing a lot of dumb things because one of the integral points of the Marker is that it drives people crazy. This includes the protagonist of the actual game.
Nobody is immune. People do stupid, insane things because they are being driven to it. In most movies that would be bad writing, here it's a core element.
Dead Space is essentially a hamfisted lovecraftian system. It's your standard horror movie but in the Dead Space universe, and stays true to those games in a nutshell.
However, the characters, while not bad, don't do enough to really stand out at times, and it just feels like your standard horror movie.
Good for fans, but not much outside of that. The language in this "movie" was too foul. I don't see the point in it.
So, I backed out after about 15 minutes. I'm 72 and put 23 year in the Army and do not recall foul language so prominent in use in any setting.
This is the back story leading up to the first Dead Space video game. The Ishimura was sent to mine the planet for materials, but then the Marker was discovered.
Suddenly the colonists were beginning to commit suicide and murder each other, presumably influenced by the Marker's power.
Crew members of the Ishimura struggle amongst each other over their belief systems, and what the Marker truly represents.
Their confidence in their captain's ability to remain objective both as a leader and as a Unitologist is challenged also. As you might imagine, everything goes to Hell once the outbreak reaches the ship.
But- This movie is inexpensive enough, and it is pretty cool after all. So if you like DS as much as I do, than you've probably already decided to buy it.

And, unfortunately, the outbreak spreads There's lots of graphic violence, plenty of death scenes, and a load of blood. The monstrous zombies, who are deformed in various ways, seek only to kill.
They're somehow being controlled the ancient alien relic found on the planet. And the crew of the starship must struggle to survive.
As a fan of both zombies and aliens, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It's a bleak tale, and one that's intended only for adult viewers. Overall, I highly recommend it.
If you enjoyed the games then you'll probably like this film. The Animation isn't to the highest standard but isn't to shabby. The voice overs aren't particually well acted and at times you get the feeling that some expletives weren't needed and crow-barred in as they seem out of place and unecessary.
Its almost as if they were deliberatley pushing for the 18 certificate to bring it in line with the certificate on the game itself.
The Audio and video content are good but not stunning for a blu ray release. I own a few Anime movies on blu ray that look superior to this one.
I also feel that to non gamers it may leave them feeling a bit empty at the end as the story stops and the game would commence.
For the gamers it gives some interesting background but as the game itself has been out for a while across ,Ps3 and PC platforms I guess it may be the case like myself you played it a while back and the story feels a bit detached now.
Never the less the price is not too bad for 1 hour 15 minute manga movie and overall i did enjoy it and thought it was ok. This was quite a good prequel I suppose, but a lot more could have been done with it.

Good points - Cleared up few questions of the game that were left unanswered in the game. Good manga detail and sound quality, with a good number of extras.
Bad points - There was a lot about the film I believed could have been done with it, for example looking deeper into the characters lives to get a real feel for who they were so the viewers feel more for them and the film if they die or risk death Also looking deeper into the mentioned aliens history etc.
Overall - The film was good but that's it unless you are a fan of the game I wouldn't really recommend this film. I bought this to fill in the back story of events that happen before the game begins and it does just that.
There is also an inconsistency with the weaponry used in the film compared to the game - I don't this this is simply an equipment difference between the two ships.
I reckon it might be down to the animators for the film mis-interperating the descriptions of the mining tools that your game character uses.
I've seen a few criticisims of the animation quality on other reviews, its certainly not Pixar quality but its adequate for the task and I think that you can say the same about the film as a whole.
I love fantasy and sci fi world-building as much as the next guy, but only when there is the characters and depth available to make the juice worth the squeeze.
The issue in my opinion with the Dead Space franchise is that its ambition is overreaching what it can truly deliver. Dead Space is an incredible game, but it has nowhere near the narrative depth or mystique to draw upon of any of its manifold influences Event Horizon, Alien etc.
What strength it can utilise from the old "what is left unseen is the most terrifying" mantra is squandered in what amounts to little more than spoilers.
This film hasn't a single character I felt drawn to, and the animation is merely adequate, so the accomplished soundtrack has to handle the tension and scares single-handedly whilst the fairly by-the-numbers prequel plays itself out.
It's no great shakes: Isaac puts most of these missing pieces of the puzzle together himself in the game, and seeing the events played out actually detracts from the creepy "Aliens" vibe of having arrived late to the party as on LV

It shows a more nuanced depiction of Unitologists. My biggest peeve is that the movie has characters never mentioned again in the game, which supposedly happens later.
But that's what happens when you make prequels. If you've never heard of Dead Space, this movie probably won't be for you. The film is very much fan service.

I am not a gamer and chose it because it was had a four-star rating and sounded interesting. Gamers, I guess, will rate the movie higher, but to me it was sort of flat.
I walked away twice, for about two minutes each time, and when I got back it was where I left it. This movie is pretty good if you enjoyed the Dead Space games.
It gives a largely believable and within canon explanation of how the Ishimura became the way Isaac finds it. The movie is filled with cliche and tropes, but if you can ignore those it's definitely a fun sci-fi slasher flick in a way.
Like bringing the captain to the morgue when our team of security just barely got out of there alive themselves. Even saying we sent a crew to bring him to the morgue but they haven't returned would have sufficed.
Late in the film our main heroine, Alissa, dashes across the hanger to release the emergency beacon A lot of characters basically throw their lives away so that Alissa can be the 'sole' survivor.
The part where Alissa asks the woman if she has a boyfriend to get her moving was also lame writing. I had no idea about the video game connection.
Maybe if you like the game you will like this. I didn't care for the language or for the gore. Maybe there was a decent plot here, but it was hidden under unnecessary violence and mediocre animation.
This was just so over the top that it completely distracted me from the fact that there was a storyline somewhere here. At least I am assuming there was a storyline -- I stopped watching after the girl with blue hair got cut in half.
