He proves that an exciting tension-filled story doesn't need blood and gore. It all takes place in the mind. Robotham scatters pieces of truth, half truths, and lies throughout and applies them to both the good guys and the bad guys.
Joe O'Laughlin and Vincent Ruiz have developed a wonderful friendship, and their humor and sarcasm offsets the tension when it's needed. Even sec I continue to be amazed by Michael Robotham.
Even secondary characters like DI Cray and Monk are well developed. Joe's wife ticked me off even though I wasn't sure what was going on with her.
The antagonist in this book is great. There are sections that are told in his own words, including this quote: "There is a moment when all hope disappears, all pride is gone, all expectation, all faith, all desire.
I own that moment. It belongs to me. That's when I hear the sound, the sound of a mind breaking. This book and this author hit all the marks for me again.

The main character is no super hero, suffering as he does from Parkinson's disease. And life is not always kind to him in many ways.
Nevertheless he struggles to help others even when the result is that he really does not help himself. I enjoyed this very much indeed.

Another audiobook during yet another long car trip. Spent 2. This book was that good! The culprit was fascinating. The friendship between Joe and Ruiz is brilliant, love their banter.

Can you hear it? Someone is curled up in a tiny ball crying softly into an endless night. One of the first things that struck me about this series is the hilarious sense of humor Joe has.
I dare say that if it weren't for the humor to break the tension I'd have had a heart attack! Cheers to Mr Robotham! Joe is an incredibly loveable character and I am already hopelessly hooked on this series!
I'm not sure if Ruiz will continue to appear in future books alongside Joe but I do hope so! Narrator, Sean Barrett, made the events, characters, and emotions pop out of the story thus bypassing the paper and ink barrier between fiction and imagination and placing them directly into my brain and nervous system causing everything to feel absolutely real, alive, and terrifying!
I'm really not exaggerating! By the end, my hands were cold and I needed more than one blanket to warm back up!
Honestly, I didn't even realize I was so cold until the last words faded away. I'm going to be listening to the remainder of this series on audiobook in close succession in the coming weeks so stay tuned!

The narration was absolutely wonderful and really added to the story for me. I have marked this book as over 18 due to the nature of the crimes.
This is the very first book I have ever listened to by this author and it certainly won't be the last. When Joe contacted his friend, retired Detective Inspector Vincent Ruiz for help, Joe managed to persuade him there was a case to look at.
Was Christine coerced into jumping? And how would anyone do that — there was no-one near her at the time? Psychology was what Joe was good at — reading people; understanding what made them tick.
And Joe was seeing anomalies everywhere he looked. Was it possible that Joe was over-reacting? Or was there much, much more to the death than anyone could see?

The book title refers to the method in which the villian, 'shatters' the victim's minds. It also shattered my sleep patterns.
The main protagonist is psychologist, Professor Joe O'Loughlin. Joe is highly skilled at reading people, yet he is flawed. He is suffering from an incureable disease, his wife is seemingly having an Australian author Michael Robotham has concocted a chilling and unputdownable psychological thriller.
He is suffering from an incureable disease, his wife is seemingly having an affair, he's dealing with a grief-stricken teenager and he brings danger to his own doorstep simply by serendipitous association.
He is an absorbing character, and I empathised with him every tremor-filled step of the way. I was drawn into this novel very early on.
The plot was captivating and built suspense, intrigue and even terror. The characters were beguiling and Robotham's writing style flowed easily from the page.

You really get the whole man with this series. Shatter has flashes of brilliance, but the story is filled with plot holes and none of the characters are very likable so this one ended up as a "meh" for me.
It's clear that this book was written earlier in his career and not as mature as that one. I skipped the first two books and jumped into the middle of this series for two reasons, the first is because my library didn't have the first two on audiobook and the second is because I wanted something from this narrator specifically more on that below.
Robotham does a good job of introducing the protagonist so it didn't feel like I was missing anything. However, the reasoning as to how a psychologist could be so deeply involved with the police in a murder investigation is one of those aforementioned plot holes that I was never able to get past.
I found the actions and motivations of all of the characters to be questionable at best, in many cases only serving to advance the plot.
Here he is inconsistent and shows his shortcoming of being poor at female voices the other book was all male characters. He attempts to give the killer a distinct voice at the beginning of the book, which ended up being so quiet I needed to turn up the volume, and then gives that up later in the book so that the main character and killer end up with the same voice.

This time, however, the killer is as cunning and psychologically astute as the good professor. In this book, however, there is a depth to the suspect that has not been present in the previous two books. His profile is more complex and his character more fascinating.
I hope that this continues in future books. If you like crime, suspense, psychological thrillers, then this is a book for you.
While you will have a better understanding of the characters if you read the series in order, Robotham always gives you ample background on each of them so that you can read the books out of order if you wish.
The great thing about finding a series of books that have been around for a number of years and the first book you read in the series you really enjoyed, is, you don't have to wait a year before you can get your hands on the next one.

So much so that I started wondering what I could be capable of in a similar situation. The conclusion I came to was I would want to, paint the walls red with his blood, a quote from one of the characters.

Warum ist es nicht Gottes Wille, dass der Jesus der wunderbaren Brotvermehrung nicht aus Steinen Brot werden lässt und warum antwortet Jesus jetzt, wie wir hörten, da es doch auch schon Hungrige gab, der Mensch lebe nicht nur vom Brot allein?
Ist der Vater, dessen Name geheiligt werden und dessen Reich endlich kommen soll, nicht auch der, der seinem eigenen Willen endlich zum Durchbruch verhelfen will?
Wie die Bergpredigt und das ganze Vaterunser insgesamt, so atmet auch diese Bitte apokalyptischen Geist, so als stehe ein Schicksalsereignis bevor.
Zeit ist keine mehr zu verlieren. Hier und jetzt geht es um die Zukunft, um das Volk und die ganze Welt und darum, dass das Recht endlich siegt und das Unrecht entlarvt, den Unterdrückten endlich geholfen wird.
Das alles hört sich weder nach Ergebung noch nach privaten Vorteilen an, und doch beschränkt sich die Bitte nicht auf ein selbstloses Programm, denn ich darf auch um mein tägliches Brot, um Trost oder, wie Jesus, um den Ausweg aus seiner tödlichen Lage bitten.
So überkreuzen sich in Gottes Willen, sobald wir ihn konkret in unser Leben übersetzen, gleich mehrere Möglichkeiten.
Einerseits umfasst er politische Weltgestaltung und Hilfe aus persönlicher Not, andererseits fordert er Widerstand und Ergebung. Und es scheint, als müssten wir selbst darüber entscheiden, wie wir Gottes Willen auslegen wollen.
Das aber kann uns in tiefe Verwirrung stürzen: Können wir — bei höchster Einsicht und bei tiefstem Glauben — überhaupt wissen, was in jeder Lage Gottes Willen ist?
Gewiss, wir kennen die Untergrenzen, die wir im Namen Gottes und im Namen des Menschen nie unterschreiten können. Sie sind unteilbar, zutiefst menschlich und für unser Zusammenleben unverzichtbar.
Das sind die Ablehnung 1 von Gewalt und der Bedrohung menschlichen Lebens, 2 von Diebstahl und der Aufkündigung mitmenschlicher Gerechtigkeit, 3 von Lüge bis hin zu lebensbedrohender Manipulation, 4 von der Untreue, die bis ins Fleisch gehen kann, und der Aufkündigung mitmenschlicher Solidarität zwischen den Stärkeren und den Schwachen.
Darüber gibt es keine Diskussion. Aber damit fängt Gottes Wille ja erst an. Wie kann darüber hinaus unser positives Handeln aussehen, welche Visionen können uns beflügeln und nach welchen Modellen sollen wir unsere Beziehungen, Gemeinschaften und die Welt gestalten?
Mit Erschrecken, manches Mal geradezu mit Verzweiflung merken wir in aussichtslosen und in undeutlichen Situationen, wie wenig wir die Antworten dann von Gottes Willen ableiten können.
Das macht uns bescheiden. Nur zu gerne legen wir, die wir uns Glaubende nennen, in Gottes Willen hinein, was wir selber möchten.
Was kann uns davor schützen? Vielleicht mögen Sie antworten: übertreiben wir nicht. Die Eltern oder die Manager, die Politiker oder die Wissenschaftler, die heute noch über Gottes Willen nachdenken, sind weder naiv noch banal.
Aber auch sie, so mein Einwurf, sind nicht dagegen gefeit, dass sie sich fügen, wo sie Widerstand leisten sollten, und dass sie zu widerstehen suchen, wo Ergebung angesagt ist.
Unsere Wirtschafts- und Sozialpolitik ist voll von solchen schwer entscheidbaren Fällen. Gewiss, wir möchten nicht banal sein, aber täglich neu müssen wir unsere Banalität überwinden.
Denn täglich werden wir stärker oder schwächer, verengt oder erweitert sich unser Horizont, täglich wandeln sich die Bedingungen, täglich ändern sich die Stufen der Dringlichkeit.
Damit wächst und ändert sich auch Gottes konkreter Wille an uns. Deshalb erfordert Gottes Wille von uns eine Wachsamkeit und Sensibilität, die konkrete Situationen immer neu beobachtet, sich etwa an der Goldenen Regel ausrichtet, denn sie fordert mich dazu auf, mich jeden Tag erneut in die Situation derer zu setzen, die mein Handeln ertragen müssen, also einen Perspektivenwechsel zu vollziehen.
Der Schreibstil des Autors ist eingängig und flüssig zu lesen, er hat eindeutig ein Hädchen dafür, seine Figuren detailliert und treffend zu charakterisieren, zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen zu beleuchten und Situationen plastisch zu beschreiben, so dass man sich in die jeweiligen Momente gut Radio Mdr Thüringen kann. Also ich hatte wahre Spannung beim lesen, habe es als Urlaubslektüre gekauft und es hat sich wirklich gelohnt. In diesem Fall ist auch Joe als Vater davon betroffen was ihn bedrohlich in meine Nähe rückt, d. Dabei rückt der Berufungstag am Kapuzinerseminar immer näher. Ein Indira Weiss gut geschriebenes Buch, welches unbedingt weiterzuempfehlen ist. Es geht nicht nur darum, dass Führung funktioniert, sondern darum, wie herausragende Führung auch sein eigenes Leben freier und erfüllter macht. Den Spannungsregler im obersten Bereich arretiert, so dass alle Warnlampen blinken, beschreibt Michael eine Suche nach einer pervertierten Natur.
